Advocacy in Action

At any given time there are a wide variety of projects or laws proposed or about to be implemented that can impact the way you do business and affect your long-term growth. The Chamber is an active advocate on behalf of its membership to help provide an effective voice for the business community before those decisions are finalized.

The Chamber is at its most effective when backed by an active and informed membership. As part of its role, our Policy and Government Affairs Committee works with Chamber staff to become fully informed on all aspects of any issue that impacts our community before working together to support the change or propose alternative solutions.

To support its advocacy efforts, The Chamber annually identifies key policy priorities areas, based on member feedback and consultations.

For 2018, The Chamber will develop policy resolutions and plan advocacy initiatives focused in the following areas:

  1. Attracting and Retaining Workers
    • Adequate Labour Supply
    • Affordable and Available Housing
    • Improving Regional Transportation
    • Affordable & Available Child Care
  2. Effective Local Governance & Services
  3. Improving the Regional Economy
  4. Fair Regulations
  5. Finding Climate Change Solutions
  6. Safe Communities

With help from our members, The Chamber is making a difference. Here are some of the favourable decisions in 2017 for our community:

  • Changes to the Small Business Proposed Tax Reform
  • Elimination of proposed Group Health Benefit tax
  • Federal funding for BC Ferries
  • Immigration – increase in quota
  • Increase in CRD and Provincial funding for housing (potential for Federal)
  • Victoria Regional Transit Commission received increased operational funding from the Province.
  • Childcare Advocacy Committee (City of Victoria)
  • Improvements in proposed regulations for plastic bag reduction (City of Victoria)
