Policy Resolutions Successfully Implemented
When policy statements have been successfully implemented by government, or a significant portion of the recommendation has been successfully implemented, the policy is deemed to have been achieved.
These policies, which originated at the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce as provincial or national polcy initiatves, are being or have been implemented.
Provincial Issues
Safe Streets (2004)
The provincial government introduced the Safe Streets Act and amendments to the Trespassing Act in October 2004. The text of the Acts can be found here.
Federal Issues
Approved Destination Status
The federal government signed an Approved Destination Status agreement with China on June 24, 2010. This agreement allows leisure travellers to vacation in Canada. Prior to the agreement, only busiess travellers, students or approved tour groups could come to Canada. China represents the largest market for increased travellers, with a projection that there will be 100 million Chinese residents expected to travel abroad by 2020.
Encouraging the Use of Public Transit through Income Tax Reform
The federal government introduced a new tax credit in 2006 for the purchase of monthly public transit passes. This came into effect on July 1, 2006. In the 2007 budget, the federal government expanded the tax credit to include electronic fare cards (such as a student may purchase) and weekly passes when used on a regular basis.
