Victoria Chamber Calls on Government to Mitigate HST Impacts in 2010 Budget

The Greater Victoria Chamber made a presentation to the province’s Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services offering input to the 2010 budgeting process. The Chamber’s presentation focussed on mitigation measures to deal with some of the impacts of the HST, pertaining to tourism, BC Ferries, new home construction and consumer increases.
“We support the overall goals of the Harmonized Sales Tax,” says John Juricic, Chamber Chair. “But at the same time we would call on the government to utilize tax approaches outside of the HST agreement to deal with some of the negative impacts of HST that affect specifically tourism, new housing, BC Ferries and consumers.”
The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has approximately 1500 members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
