Victoria Chamber Priorities Win National Support at Canadian Chamber

October 05, 2009

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce supported the re-development of Bellville Street International Terminal as an item of national importance at policy debates during the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General meeting on Sunday October 4th.

“Having the US Customs Pre-clearance site up to the same standard as other pre-clearance sites across the country is important in maintaining security,” stated Bruce Carter, Victoria Chamber CEO. “We are pleased that the Canadian Chamber sees the importance of this site and the role that a high standard facility at an international border crossing plays in our relationship with our US neighbours.”

Delegates also agreed that capital gains taxes from the sale of rental real estate should be deferred if re-invested in rental property within twelve months. Such a tax change would trigger activity in the rental housing industry and spur new development.

Also fully endorsed was a policy resolution calling for increased sentencing for prolific offenders through an amendment to the criminal code in the section that guides sentencing decisions.

Over 300 delegates from across Canada are meeting in Victoria as the Greater Victoria Chamber plays host to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting. Conference sessions continue at the Victoria Conference Centre until Monday evening.
