Annual Report Shows Why We’re A Natural Place to do Business

May 05, 2009

Coming up on its second anniversary, the Greater Victoria Development Agency is helping to put Greater Victoria on the map, with KPMG recognizing the region as one of the top places to do business in the Pacific Northwest in 2008.  This is just one highlight of the recently released annual report for the GVDA.

“2008 was an excellent year for both the GVDA and the Greater Victoria economy. Unemployment in the region was the lowest in Canada, and the region’s labour force increased by over 4%”, said Sasha Angus, Economic Development Officer. “As we look forward to 2009 there are certainly challenges, but Greater Victoria is well situated to weather this storm and continue growing in 2010.”

The GVDA’s main goals are to assist existing businesses to grow, retain existing companies and attract new business development to the region.  Activities sited in the annual report include helping over 180 local businesses employing over 3,000 people, the development of a regional business attraction and retention strategy, developing a Greater Victoria regional video, as well as a regional trade mission supporting the new San Francisco direct flight. The Agency was recognized for its efforts as a finalist for the “Prestige Award” for excellence in economic development.

In addition to working directly on the economic development of Greater Victoria, the GVDA is a member in the Vancouver Island Economic Alliance, and delivered the annual “State of the Island” address for 2008. Angus is the chair of VIEA for 2009.

The GVDA Annual Report will be received through a mail drop to regional businesses and stakeholders the first week of May.

The Greater Victoria Development Agency is an industry led agency representing the major industries and academic stakeholders of the region. The GVDA seeks to ensure that Greater Victoria remains a vibrant place to live, work and invest.
