Mooring Dolphins a Good Investment of Government Dollars

March 30, 2009

The Chamber of Commerce was amongst the groups applauding Minister Kevin Falcon’s provincial infrastructure funding announcement today of $1.5 million to the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority to assist in building mooring dolphins at Ogden Point.

“Infrastructure investment that generates household sustaining jobs now and builds our regional industries for the future is exactly what we need for our region,” says John Juricic, Chair of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. “The mooring dolphins at Ogden Point do both of those things and is a great way for government to invest our money.”

The $4.5 million dollar project, which will essentially extend the length of the docks at Ogden Point, will enable the new generation of larger cruise ships to dock in Victoria.

The Chamber of Commerce, along with other industry associations and chamber members, has identified a number of regional infrastructure projects that they believe will have a long-term positive economic impact for the entire region. “This is one of the projects we were impressing to government should be done,” continues John Juricic. “Hearing an announcement for something this significant for one of our largest industries in the region is encouraging. This is a good news story.”

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has approximately 1500 members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
