Heritage Designation costs up to $1 Million

The City of Victoria has many competing interests for city funds in 2009. The expenditure of $1Million to designate Rogers’ Chocolates could have been better spent on policing, water mains or on bridge repairs.
“Rogers’ pledged to maintain the heritage character of the shop while increasing its productivity. A company that has been doing business in Victoria for 120 years deserves some trust,” says Bruce Carter, CEO of the Chamber.
Although the actual cost is subject to legal action the Chamber estimates the final cost to be between $500,000 and $1,000,000 “This is a significant discretionary decision by Victoria Council” said Carter.
