Budget Supports Competitiveness and Clean Technology

February 17, 2009

The Greater Victoria Development Agency is encouraged by the provincial government’s emphasis on the clean technology industry and the growth of renewable energy in the province.  Announcements included a continued $25 million for companies in the field of clean technology and an additional $10 million for research, innovation and competitiveness.

“As a service and knowledge-based economy with a strong capacity in clean and renewable technologies, we are encouraged to see support for this growing industry in our region,” said Sasha Angus, GVDA Economic Development Officer.  “Local companies in this field provide innovative products for customers around the world, and generate household sustaining jobs in Greater Victoria.”

Investments for training and post secondary education were also highlighted, with 2,000 new spaces for apprenticeships.  “The Greater Victoria region is a destination for talented people who seek education and opportunity.  As we build for the future, we must continue to attract people to support our local industries and remain globally competitive. The government’s investment in post secondary training and facilities helps us with that goal.” said Angus.

The Greater Victoria Development Agency is an industry led economic agency representing the major industries and academic stakeholders of the region. The GVDA seeks to ensure that Greater Victoria remains a vibrant place to live, work and invest.
