GLOBAL COMPETITION HITS HOME

May 10, 2011 – Victoria, BC – The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce reacted with concern about the announcement that Western Union will be relocating jobs from their operations in Victoria out of the region.  The announcement will see 140 local positions being moved to other Western Union business centers around the world.

“We are always sorry to see any loss of employment in Greater Victoria,” said Bruce Carter, CEO at the Greater Victoria Chamber. “This decision highlights the competitive global market in which the region operates, and the need to maintain a positive business climate.”

The retention of local management decisions has been widely identified as a contributing factor to the sustainability of any business or organization in a region. Once those direct ties to the management of an organization are lost, other activities and operations become increasingly hard to maintain.

“We have been very fortunate to have a number of international companies invest in local businesses such as Custom House,” continued Carter. “Given the global reach of these businesses, as a community, it is important that we continue reaching out to employers to make sure we are meeting their needs.”

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has close to 1,500 members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
