Chamber Member of the Year Announced for 2018

Victoria, December 5, 2017 – Local entrepreneur, Al Hasham has been named Chamber Member of the Year for 2018.

Hasham has been an active member of The Chamber for over 30 years. His volunteer service on behalf of The Chamber has benefited many businesses, whether through his mentorship of young professionals, business advice or leadership when advocating on behalf of our community and our businesses. Most recently he has spent the past eight years devoting countless hours on The Chamber board, spending the last two as the Board Chair.

Al supports dozens of charity events annually in Victoria with complimentary services through his company Maximum Express Courier, Freight & Logistics, for many organizations including the BC Cancer Foundation, Victoria Hospital Foundation (Visions Gala), Lifetime Networks, Our Place Society, World Partnership Walk Victoria, Think Local First and United Way of Greater Victoria.

The Chamber Member of the Year award recognizes an individual who has served as a volunteer at The Chamber taking an active role in committees or on the board, promotes and fosters relationships with the community and advocates on behalf of business.

The Governors’ Lifetime Achievement Award which honours an individual for their outstanding leadership and accomplishments over the decades will be announced in January, 2018. Finalists for the annual Greater Victoria Business Awards in 12 other categories will be announced in February, 2018.

The annual Business Awards gala will be held on May 10, 2018 at the Fairmont Empress.

BACKGROUNDER

Al Hasham – Biography

Al Hasham is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Maximum Express Courier, Freight and Logistics, President and CEO of Max Furniture, CEO of Cambria College and Chair of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

Al oversees the operation of Maximum Express Courier, Freight and Logistics from the corporate head office in Victoria, with a branch office in Vancouver. The company currently has 25 company-owned vehicles and 35 employees. Shipping locally, nationally and internationally, Maximum Express is a full-service courier, freight and logistics company. Maximum Express has won awards in customer service, employee person-of-the-year and philanthropy for its work in the community.

Prior to founding Maximum Express in Victoria in 2004, Al was the owner of DanFoss Couriers which he started alongside his brother in 1987 when they first moved to Victoria.

Al is also the President and Chief Executive Officer at Max Furniture which he founded in 2008. Max Furniture is a retail furniture store offering good quality and made-to-order furniture for any room in your home or office.

In 2016, Al became the Chief Executive Officer at Cambria College which specializes in the health care sector, specifically, the health care assistance diploma.

For community involvement, Al has been heavily involved with the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce (GVCC) since 1987 and has served on the Board of Directors since 2010 in various roles. In 2016, Al became the Chair of the Board of Directors for the GVCC which is a 2 year commitment ending December 31, 2017. Then Al will become past chair for two year and a lifetime governor of The Chamber.

In 2016, Al was on the Advisory Board for the Harbourcats Baseball Team.

Al has lived, and been a business owner, in Victoria since 1987.
