Tech Sector in Greater Victoria Gets Boost From BC Budget

February 17, 2015– Victoria, BC – The $4-billion high-tech sector in Greater Victoria gets a boost with the extension of the Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit announced by Minister of Finance Michael de Jong in the 2015 BC Budget announced today.

“The extension of the Digital Media Tax Credit is great news for the tech sector in Greater Victoria,” said Bruce Carter, CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce (The Chamber). “The video game industry saw significant growth in 2014, this continued tax credit will provide stability for this industry in our community. We hope to see continued growth in 2015 and beyond.”

The Interactive Digital Media Tax Credit, which was set to expire this year, has been extended to 2018. This tax credit offsets the cost of developing video games and other digital media. In addition, the interactive Digital Animation or Visual Effects Tax Credit is expanded to include post-production film activities. The expansion of this tax credit will support film production in Greater Victoria. The film production industry in Greater Victoria saw its best year in 2014 since 2007 with the inclusion of the Capital region in the Distance Location Tax Credit introduced in the 2014 Budget.

The Chamber is Accredited with Distinction from the Canadian Accreditation Council of Canada. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, with approximately 1,400 members, is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region.
