Community Celebrates Chamber Work

February 16, 2015 – Victoria, BC – In celebrating its contributions to our regional community, the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce (The Chamber) is celebrating Chamber Week from Feb 16th to 20th with events scheduled throughout the week.

Once a year The Chamber gets to celebrate the work that they do, not just for its members but for the entire Captial region. The Chamber’s four pillars that support the community include advocacy, building connections, programs and service, and regional economic development.

“One of our advocacy wins came into effect Jan 1st this year. Common rates for natural gas on Vancouver Island now means we will be pay the same as the rest of the province. Small commercial users are already seeing a 31 per cent cost reduction,” said Bruce Carter, CEO of The Chamber.

The common rates proposal was initially rejected by British Columbia Utility Commission; however, The Chamber was one of six interveners in the reconsideration advocating for fair natural gas rates. The approval of common rates marks just one of The Chamber’s many successful advocacy wins for the benefit of the community, which will make the region more competitive.

Chamber Week events include the full range of chamber work including advocacy, building connections and program services. This year The Chamber is hosting Provincial Finance Minister Michael de Jong for his post-budget speech on Feb 18th to a sold-out crowd.

Another reason to celebrate, in 2015 The Chamber received Re-Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Accreditation Council of Canada, making it one of only nine accredited chambers in BC. The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, with approximately 1,400 members, is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region.
