Amalgamation Results Are In!

July 29, 2014 – Victoria, BC – Amalgamation poll results released today show that 84 per cent of residents in the Capital region are in favour of amalgamation.

The poll, conducted by Angus Reid, surveyed residents on issues relating to governance structures. The results show not only strong support for amalgamation but also having a non-binding referendum on amalgamation at 89 per cent support. The poll sampled residents across all the 13 municipalities.

“Even with the on-going regional dispute over sewage treatment, we are surprised by the overwhelming support amalgamation has across all municipalities,” said Frank Bourree, Chair of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

A key component of a vibrant community is cohesive local government. The continued divisions and disputes between the 124 regional politicians, 13 municipalities, CRD and Electoral Areas fail to develop and deliver a unified regional vision is clearly identified by this poll.

How do we address the need clearly expressed in this poll? I must say I am not sure. Determining the path to reasonable local government is something that has eluded the Chamber since 1919,” said Bourree.

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce is pleased to have co-sponsored this poll with partners: Amalgamation Yes, the Victoria Real Estate Board, and the Victoria Hotel Association.
