Chamber Calls on Government to Produce Cost-savings Plan for BC Ferries

October 7, 2013 – Victoria, BC – The Chamber has initiated a letter writing campaign aimed at the Ministry of Transportation’s efforts to once again consult on BC Ferries services.

“The Chamber has great concerns that continued consultation with no results will foster distrust among affected coastal communities,” said Bruce Carter, The Chamber, CEO. “We are asking the Minister of Transportation to bring forward a cost savings plan before consulting the public again.”

BC Ferries needs $26 million to balance its budget. Consultation to date has identified three areas for cost savings and efficiencies, including raising ferry rates, increasing subsidies, and adjusting service levels.  The Chamber acknowledges that realistically all three areas need changes to meet the financial demands.  The Chamber wants the Ministry of Transportation along with BC Ferries to develop a cost saving plan to be presented to the public for review.  Developing a transportation solution that meets the needs of coastal communities is essential and must be accomplished in a responsible and sustainable manner.
