Chamber Urges Fortis Appeal

February 27, 2013 – Victoria, BC – The BC Utilities Commission decision regarding natural gas rates is not consistent with electricity or telecommunications decisions. There are common rates across the province for electricity, balancing the cost of operating the utility among all users throughout the province.

Using natural gas has significantly less environmental impact than other fossil fuels. Environmental impact seems to be much more the concern of the commission than regional pricing models; however the panel’s argument that Vancouver Island uses more high-carbon heating fuels only furthers the need for a common rate. If natural gas rates on Vancouver Island were decreased as part of the common rate proposal, it would encourage users to switch to natural gas from the other more environmentally damaging fuels.

If this anti-subsidization premise were applied to other utilities Northern BC wouldn’t have access to electricity or phone service. This decision must be re-examined.
