Tourism and Travel Greater Victoria’s Greatest Barrier to Competitiveness

February 12, 2013 – Victoria, BC – The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Victoria agree that tourism and travel is one of Greater Victoria’s greatest barriers to competitiveness. Chamber CEO Bruce Carter and Tourism Victoria CEO Rob Gialloreto partnered in a joint press conference this morning to highlight Canada’s overall disadvantage when compared with other global tourism destinations. The event coincided with the national launch of the Canadian Chamber’s Top 10 Barriers to Competiveness today.

“Canada has slipped from seventh to 18th place among the world’s tourism destinations in less than a decade,” said Tourism Victoria CEO Rob Gialloreto. “Tourism is a major industry for our city, meaning this barrier is a disadvantage to us all.”

“The Chamber is actively involved as an advocate for public policies that foster a strong competitive economic environment both locally and across Canada,” said Chamber CEO Bruce Carter. “Supportive public policy at all levels of government is necessary to maintain our competitiveness.”
