Victoria Chamber to Help Drive National Infrastructure Agenda

May 30, 2012 – Victoria, BC –Victoria Chamber staff will be players on the national stage representing the region and Chambers across the country in framing and advocating for a new commitment to municipal infrastructure funding in Canada. The Chamber will be the only stakeholder from the region at the invitation only meetings, as future plans for nation’s municipal infrastructure are discussed at FCM’s Municipal Infrastructure Forum on June 4th.

“We are honoured to represent not only the perspective of the country’s largest Chambers, but the interests of the Victoria region as well,” said Sasha Angus, Manager of Policy and Government Affairs at the Victoria Chamber. “As the authors of provincial and national Chamber policy on the subject, we look forward to a constructive discussion on this very important issue for our community.”

Sasha Angus, the Chamber’s Manager of Policy and Government Affairs will join national civic leaders, industry heads and federal and provincial officials for the second meeting of the Municipal Infrastructure Forum. Representing a cross section of industry and public sector stakeholders, forum participation is limited.  Appointments are made by FCM’s President, who considers the knowledge and expertise of potential members, as well as the need to balance regional, community size and gender representation.

On November 30, 2011, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister for Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities, launched an 18-month process to develop a new long-term infrastructure plan.  This process will build a plan to deliver long-term predictable investments to Canada’s public infrastructure, and will renew the Building Canada Plan when it expires in 2014.

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, with approximately 1,500 members, is the voice of business for Greater Victoria and has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
