BC Ferries and Workforce Housing Lead Five Victoria Chamber Policy Wins

May 28, 2012 – Victoria, BC – The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce celebrated 5 policy wins at the BC Chamber AGM in Penticton, BC.  Focusing on issues important to our business and broader community, the policies were endorsed by over 120 Chambers as provincial policy.

“The Chamber’s ferry policy supports the government’s recent direction for a serious look at the sustainability of minor routes and changing the way ferry services are provided in the future,” said Bruce Carter, CEO of the Chamber.   Ensuring that the ferry system is financially sustainable is a significant issue given that fare increases have continually outstripped both the rate of inflation and the rate of economic growth.”

Serious concerns to local businesses, changes to attract talent and support workforce housing were amongst the other major pushes of the Chamber. The Victoria Chamber lead the call on reforms to help local companies access global talent and pushed for changes that will help foster a better housing market for the Victoria’s workforce.

“Tax changes introduced over the past 25 years have disadvantaged the treatment of investment in real property and rental housing in particular,” said Bruce Carter. “The result has been decreased activity in the rental housing market, including less property turnover and revitalization and less purpose built rental property construction. This has had a serious affect on affordable workforce housing in Greater Victoria.”

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, with approximately 1,500 members, is the voice of business for Greater Victoria and has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
