Five Myths Plaguing the Johnson Street Bridge Discussion

Victoria, BC – The Greater Victoria Chamber addresses the myths that are plaguing the discussion on the borrowing referendum for the Johnson Street Bridge on their by-elections website. A vocal supporter of borrowing, the Chamber is concerned that the community discussion is not centred on the financial issue of the bridge and is bogged down in misconception.

“We have been out in the community addressing the referendum coming up in November, and it is surprising how many people are still discussing whether we need a new bridge or not. That decision has already been made with the participation of citizens and businesses. We now need to decide on financing, and deal with the implications of borrowing or not borrowing – and those implications are significant,” says Bruce Carter, CEO of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

The five myths related to the bridge are:

            Doing nothing is an option

            Borrowing is irresponsible

The bridge can be rehabilitated for $8.6 million

            Refurbishing is the best option

The City has paid consultants to get the answers they want

The Chamber’s elections website can be accessed at

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has approximately 1500 members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
