Chamber Begins Conversation on Energy

Victoria, BC – Our energy needs continue to grow yet we must reduce our environmental footprint to have a sustainable community and country. The Chamber has recognized that its energy policy is deficient and will work for the next twelve months to increase the level of knowledge regarding energy in our community. Recent events in the Gulf of Mexico and controversy over a number of energy projects have further highlighted energy as a concern for our community.

The Chamber will work to attract a broad spectrum of energy speakers with a variety of perspectives as we work with our provincial partners to create an energy policy.

“As an organization you must be willing to discuss difficult and controversial issues. I am sure the majority of the speakers will provoke discussion and look forward to that community dialogue,” says Bruce Carter, Chamber CEO.

The first speaker the Chamber has secured is Don Thompson, President of the Oil Sands Developers group who will speak at a chamber function on October 13th. Mr. Thompson will speak on how the oil sands play a critical role in Canada’s energy position, even in the environment of increased sustainable practice. The Chamber has requested other speakers from the Suzuki Foundation and will be pursuing speakers to represent other types of energy production as well, such as wind, run of river, geo-thermal electricity and natural gas.

The Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce has approximately 1500 members and is the voice of business for the Greater Victoria region. The Greater Victoria Chamber has received Accreditation with Distinction from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
